Third-party licenses

Third-party notices

AI Career Atlas is a data site, so there are exactly three places other people's work leaves our machines: the JavaScript that aicareeratlas.com sends to a visitor's browser, the analytics script it serves from its own origin, and the web fonts it serves from that same origin. This file is the single source of truth for what that work is and under which license it travels, and /licenses/ renders this same file as the page you may be reading it on.

The test for what belongs here is "do these bytes leave our machines". Not "did we install it" — most of what this repo depends on runs at build time on a laptop or a CI runner, inside the nightly pipeline job, or inside the server that answers requests, and none of that is distribution under any of the licenses involved. §2 lists those packages as deliberately excluded rather than silently missing.

Every license involved is permissive (MIT for the software, the SIL Open Font License 1.1 for the fonts); passing the notice on is the condition of redistributing a copy, and a browser download is a copy.

1. Sent to a visitor's browser

1.1 JavaScript

Every page renders on the server and the filters are plain HTML forms, but Next.js still sends React and its own client runtime to hydrate the page.

Package Version License Copyright
next 16.3.6 MIT Copyright (c) 2025 Vercel, Inc.
react, react-dom 19.3.0 MIT Copyright (c) Meta Platforms, Inc. and affiliates.

The account pages (/gdpr/, signed in only, #85) also send site-kit's account components, which bring these with them; no public page loads any of them.

1.2 The analytics script

When analytics is enabled, /_a/script.js is Umami's tracker, fetched from our self-hosted Umami instance and served from this site's origin (apps/home/lib/analytics-proxy.mjs).

1.3 Fonts — IBM Plex Sans and IBM Plex Mono

SIL Open Font License 1.1 · https://github.com/IBM/plex

The .woff2 files are Google Fonts' own subsets — every subset Google serves for each family: Plex Sans as one variable file per subset, Plex Mono as its 400 and 600 instances — committed as Google serves them under apps/home/src/fonts/ and loaded through next/font/local (src/fonts/index.js). Committing them keeps Google out of the build too: next/font/google would fetch these same bytes on every build, and a malformed Google response fails it (vercel/next.js#99114). The files are served from aicareeratlas.com itself — that is redistribution, and it is also why no page asks Google for anything (/privacy says so).

Family Copyright line, read from the .woff2 we serve
IBM Plex Sans Copyright 2019 IBM Corp. All rights reserved.
IBM Plex Mono Copyright 2017 IBM Corp. All rights reserved.

Two faces, two lines, none written from memory: the name table of each served file is the authority — apps/home/test/fonts.test.mjs reads every committed file and apps/home/scripts/verify-notices.mjs every font a build emits, and each fails when this table stops matching them. Plex Sans states 2019 and Plex Mono 2017, so one line for both would be wrong for one of them. Plex has a Reserved Font Name ("Plex"), which forbids shipping a self-modified subset under that name (OFL §3) — so the files are not re-cut: they are Google's own subsets, byte for byte. Full text in §4.2.

2. What is deliberately NOT here

Server-side only, verified absent from the browser bundle (no chunk under .next/static/chunks/ contains them): class-variance-authority, clsx and tailwind-merge build class names while a page renders on the server, drizzle-orm and postgres query the database from the server (and postgres is bundled into the nightly pipeline below), pino writes the server's logs, and @aicareeratlas/core is this repo's own code. @jun/site-kit is the family's own code, not third-party — the newsletter's mail-service client and routes, the log writer, the table definitions, and the account components on /gdpr/ (their third-party dependencies are in §1.1). @auth/drizzle-adapter stores accounts in the database, on the server only. Icons are inline SVG — lucide-react was removed because it ships as a client component.

Build and test time only: tailwindcss and @tailwindcss/postcss are compilers whose output is this repo's own stylesheet; marked, yaml, unified, remark-parse, remark-gfm, remark-rehype and rehype-stringify compile content/ and this file into the page data at build time, so a visitor receives their output as HTML; sharp renders the icons and share images once, from apps/home/scripts/brand-assets.mjs; esbuild bundles the pipeline; drizzle-kit turns the schema into the committed migrations; @electric-sql/pglite is the in-process Postgres the tests run on; vitest, @vitest/coverage-v8, @playwright/test, @axe-core/playwright, eslint, @eslint/js, eslint-config-next, eslint-plugin-react-hooks, globals and prettier never leave the machine that runs them.

The nightly pipeline (@aicareeratlas/pipeline, bundled with esbuild) runs as a job in our own cluster and is never served to anyone.

The server runtime. Answering HTTP with software's output is not distributing that software under any license here (none is AGPL), so the server half of the Next.js build — and the container image, which only we run — owes no notice. If any of the above ever starts being sent to a browser, it moves to §1 with its license text.

3. The job data

Not software, but other people's work, so it belongs in the same document. The numbers on this site are derived from the public job boards that the companies we track publish through Greenhouse, Ashby and Lever. We store and show derived facts only — title, location, remote status, posted base range, role family, skill tags, dates — and link every posting to the company's own page; job descriptions are read to derive those facts and are never stored or republished. For technical postings the reading includes a language model: the description, without the text a company repeats on every posting, is sent through Anthropic's API, which answers with skill tags from our fixed vocabulary; only the tags are kept. The company list and how each board is read are on /methodology/.

-----------------------------------------------------------
SIL OPEN FONT LICENSE Version 1.1 - 26 February 2007
-----------------------------------------------------------

PREAMBLE
The goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide
development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation
efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and
open framework in which fonts may be shared and improved in partnership
with others.

The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and
redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves. The
fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded,
redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved
names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives,
however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The
requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply
to any document created using the fonts or their derivatives.

DEFINITIONS
"Font Software" refers to the set of files released by the Copyright
Holder(s) under this license and clearly marked as such. This may
include source files, build scripts and documentation.

"Reserved Font Name" refers to any names specified as such after the
copyright statement(s).

"Original Version" refers to the collection of Font Software components as
distributed by the Copyright Holder(s).

"Modified Version" refers to any derivative made by adding to, deleting,
or substituting -- in part or in whole -- any of the components of the
Original Version, by changing formats or by porting the Font Software to a
new environment.

"Author" refers to any designer, engineer, programmer, technical
writer or other person who contributed to the Font Software.

PERMISSION & CONDITIONS
Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining
a copy of the Font Software, to use, study, copy, merge, embed, modify,
redistribute, and sell modified and unmodified copies of the Font
Software, subject to the following conditions:

1) Neither the Font Software nor any of its individual components,
in Original or Modified Versions, may be sold by itself.

2) Original or Modified Versions of the Font Software may be bundled,
redistributed and/or sold with any software, provided that each copy
contains the above copyright notice and this license. These can be
included either as stand-alone text files, human-readable headers or
in the appropriate machine-readable metadata fields within text or
binary files as long as those fields can be easily viewed by the user.

3) No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font
Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted by the corresponding
Copyright Holder. This restriction only applies to the primary font name as
presented to the users.

4) The name(s) of the Copyright Holder(s) or the Author(s) of the Font
Software shall not be used to promote, endorse or advertise any
Modified Version, except to acknowledge the contribution(s) of the
Copyright Holder(s) and the Author(s) or with their explicit written
permission.

5) The Font Software, modified or unmodified, in part or in whole,
must be distributed entirely under this license, and must not be
distributed under any other license. The requirement for fonts to
remain under this license does not apply to any document created
using the Font Software.

TERMINATION
This license becomes null and void if any of the above conditions are
not met.

DISCLAIMER
THE FONT SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND,
EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT
OF COPYRIGHT, PATENT, TRADEMARK, OR OTHER RIGHT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE
COPYRIGHT HOLDER BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY,
INCLUDING ANY GENERAL, SPECIAL, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL
DAMAGES, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING
FROM, OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE FONT SOFTWARE OR FROM
OTHER DEALINGS IN THE FONT SOFTWARE.
